We are often told to do something or not to do something. However,
often times, we are not always told why. At ASD Motors, when we
advise you to do something, we explain why we say so. Below are
pieces of helpful advice on common motoring issues, which we hope
will clarify why it is important to check and maintain your vehicle
on a regular basis.
Batteries
Most modern cars have sealed batteries, which cannot be topped up
with fluid, like their old generation counterparts. Consequently,
batteries can just fail without notice, particularly when the
weather gets cold and the battery has to work much harder to start a
cold engine. It is, therefore, a good idea to have your battery
checked before the onset of cold weather in order to assess its
condition.
Wipers and Screen Washer System
The rainy season is the worst time of the year for wipers and screen
washer system. Always ensure that your wipers are in good condition
(not such that will smear the windscreen) and that the screen washer
system remains topped up with good quality washer fluid.
Braking System
Always check to ensure that your brakes are in good working order,
especially if you are planning a long journey. The brake fluid used
by manufacturers is”Dot 4” ”Hydroscopic”, In other words, it absorbs
water. For this reason, most manufacturers recommend changing the
brake fluid every two to three years.
Tyres
Tyres become risky when the treads are worn down to 1.5mm or below.
Visual inspection should be carried out periodically and,
particularly with the onset of rainy season, it is not enough to
check the tread. Efforts should be made to check the tyre walls for
deterioration and damage. Rubber, as it were, perishes over time,
when it starts causing cracks and weaknesses to the tyre, which
could result to accident.
Cooling System
Coolant (formally known as anti-corrosion and rust inhibitor) should
be checked for correct levels of protection before the onset of
rainy season. The garage will be able to check and recommend the
correct coolant to top up the system.
Timing Belt
Most modern engines use a Timing Belt made from rubber, which, as
earlier mentioned, is perishable. This means that most timing belts
need changing at approximately 80,000 kilometers or3 years.
Air Conditioning System
It is important to maintain your Air Conditioning System in peak
condition to ensure that the air you breathe in the car is free from
bacteria. A poorly maintained system can also affect the fuel
efficiency of your vehicle. |
